At the 2019 Specialty Coffee Expo over 500 volunteers will fill 1400+ positions in a variety of roles. Our lead volunteers help coordinate tasks and volunteers in key areas.

If you are able to fulfill the volunteer commitment, and would like to be considered for one of these lead volunteer roles, please complete all pages of the application below.

The review process could take up to eight weeks. If you wish to help as volunteer during the show, you are encouraged to register for a 3-Day Expo Badge and select your shifts. If you are invited to hold a lead role we will adjust your volunteer schedule at that time.

LEAD ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Expo


Cupping Exchange Manager - Thursday-Sunday
The Cupping Exchange Manager will ensure that the cupping room stations are set properly for each session and that the Cupping Exchange runs smoothly. This position will supervise temporary convention services staff to ensure dishes are washed and returned to the Cupping Exchange rooms, oversee the Cupping Exchange volunteers to fulfill the tasks needed, and assist with light sorting and packing at the close of the Expo.

Green Team Coordinator - Thursday-Sunday
The two lead volunteers for sustainability will manage the Green Team volunteers on site between Thursday and Sunday. The Green Team helps the SCA uphold our commitment to event sustainability by keeping compostable and recyclable waste out of the landfill and many Green Team volunteers are first-time attendees to Expo. As the lead volunteer, you will be responsible for greeting, orienting, placing and rotating members of the green team to cover as many waste stations as possible during each volunteer shift. This volunteer will be the main point of contact for Green Team volunteers as well as for industry sustainability leaders who meet with Green Team members to put on-site waste reduction efforts into the context of coffee industry sustainability. This is a half-day commitment for four days, Thursday-Sunday.

Education Room Monitor - Thursday-Sunday
The Education Room Monitors (Brewing, Sensory) will help on site Thursday through Sunday supporting the courses and workshops. Duties include but are not limited to: sorting/organizing class handouts and delivering to appropriate classes, collecting sign in sheets and surveys, preparing/labeling class materials and coffee, general runner duties as needed for classrooms, fill gaps and assist as needed in Courses, and assist with set up and pack up.

Registration Volunteer Coordinator - Wednesday-Sunday
In this role you will assist the Association in providing Expo attendees with a positive registration experience by overseeing the Queue Organizer volunteers. You will place these volunteers in different positions throughout the registration area to answer registration questions, making sure attendees have the proper paperwork completed and assist in helping attendees to move through the queue lines as quickly as possible. You will also be responsible for stocking the lanyards and helping staff to ensure the queue lines are moving quickly and efficiently. This is a half-day commitment for five days, Wednesday-Sunday. Please indicate if you would prefer the morning or afternoon time frame. There will be a mandatory training webinar prior to the show.

Volunteer Lounge: Check-in Coordinator - Tuesday-Sunday
The Volunteer Lounge: Check-in Coordinator will help in the Volunteer Lounge from Tuesday-Sunday. In this position you will assist the Volunteer Manager with a variety of tasks related to volunteer check-in, volunteer training and placing volunteers in their shifts. You will also assist in tracking volunteer hours, filling onsite volunteer needs and overseeing any events happening in the volunteer lounge throughout the week. The hours for this position are all day Wednesday and Thursday and 1/2 days on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This will be a shared position. There will be a mandatory training webinar prior to the show.

World Barista Championship (WBC)


WBC Head Runner - Wednesday-Sunday
The head runner ensures competitors are ready for their stage time. The head runner will help competitors bring their equipment on-stage using the competitors trolley/cart. The head runner will receive the list of competitors with the competition times, and will work closely with the stage manager to ensure every competitor is on schedule, and will help to resolve any issues. Please note: all volunteers must be extremely careful, and respectful, of competitor trolleys at all times.

WBC Scorekeeper - Thursday-Sunday
The scorekeeper will help the head scorekeeper calculate, and process competition scores. They will transfer the scores from the paper score sheets to an excel spreadsheet. This role is extremely time-sensitive and demanding. The scorekeeper role requires a good knowledge of Excel, an understanding of formulas, and a good attention to detail.

World Brewers Cup Championships (WBrC)


WBrC Head Runner - Friday-Sunday

Activities Hall


Activities Hall: Check-in Coordinator - Thursday-Sunday
As the Activities Hall: Check-in Coordinator you will direct the competition volunteers to their stage and introduce them to their stage manager at the beginning of their shift. You will work closely with the Volunteer Manger to fill open volunteer spots during the Championship so that they will run smoothly. This is a half-day commitment for four days, Thursday-Sunday. Please indicate if you would prefer the morning or afternoon time frame.
